Production of Bacteriorhodopsin from halobacterium

Bacteriorhodopsin, the only protein obtained from halobacterium is in great demand for research and development because of its vast application. The Halobacteria are a class of the Euryarchaeota, found in water saturated or nearly saturated with salt(4M salt and higher). Large blooms of Halobacteria appear reddish, from the pigment bacteriorhodopsin, related to the retinal pigment rhodopsin. This pigment is used to absorb light, which provides energy to create ATP.
